#226: Show me your hands
Show me your hands,
I’ll see anxiety biting
whilst you sit
and wait
Show me your hands
I’ll see you labouring
with life gripped,
twisting in your palm
Show me you hands
I’ll see the wrinkles of age
writing your story.
Plotting your path
Show your me your hands
I’ll the scars
that time has faded,
but memory has not
Show me your hands
I’ll see tears that you have wiped;
from thine eye,
from their cheek
Show me your hands
I’ll see who you cherish
Who’s love clasps your fingers
Who’s life laces yours
Show me your hands
I’ll see your strength
I’ll see your tenderness
I’ll see you
Show me your hand
I’ll see what you long for
The passion
that clenches your fist
Show me your hands
Tell me your story
And I’ll tell you mine

I wrote this recently after watching films and documentaries about people fighting for causes they care about.
I was brushing my teeth after watching a film and caught a glimpse of my hand holding my toothbrush in the mirror.
I noticed the wedding ring on my finger and the blistered scar from rowing. I thought of how much you could tell of me just by looking at my hands.
And I thought of the people who have protested or raised their hands over the years to campaign for causes they are passionate about. To raise their voice, call someone out or say something that matters to them.
I thought of how powerful it is to raise your hand and tell your story.
How simple it is too. How much change (possibly all change) comes from someone, somewhere telling their story and showing us what they care about.
Cheers,
